Beyond the Hype: Building Toward a More Sustainable Future in Web3

Web3 was built on a vision of open collaboration, transparency, and shared value creation. At its best, it promises a future where creators, thinkers, and builders from all walks of life can contribute meaningfully without needing institutional permission. But for the space to thrive long term, it’s worth reflecting on how some current practices may be steering it away from those original intentions.

Much of the public focus has centered on high-profile failures—like overhyped NFT projects or unsustainable AI integrations—but these often distract from more nuanced issues. Beneath the surface, patterns have emerged where time, labor, and creativity are often extracted under the guise of collective progress, with compensation or recognition deferred indefinitely.

Creators are frequently encouraged to “build” under the banner of community participation, with promises of future opportunity in place of fair compensation today. While this is often positioned as part of a collaborative ethos, it can unintentionally foster conditions where creative labor is undervalued or even normalized as unpaid. In parallel, a scenario can arise where a small number of highly visible figures—potentially those with deep access to resources—can hold informal influence over what gets attention or traction. Their preferences could shape which voices rise and which ones quietly fade from view, even when alternative or critical perspectives might offer needed insight.

This mirrors broader collective habits where power dynamics shape outcomes in subtle but lasting ways. But Web3 still holds the potential to evolve beyond those patterns, if we take care to realign with its founding values—shared contribution, transparency, and authentic participation.

Right now, many everyday people are navigating a digital world that feels both overwhelming and opaque. The sheer pace of change, coupled with the flood of surface-level information, can discourage meaningful engagement. Yet behind the scenes, conversations and decisions are potentially unfolding that may shape the next decade of public digital life—affecting how we work, learn, and connect.

I share these thoughts because I believe in the possibility of thoughtful, people-centered evolution in this space. As someone deeply committed to ethical, responsible approaches to technology, I see enormous opportunity in Web3 when it is approached with care, curiosity, and respect for human dignity. These conversations are not just relevant—they are necessary for the space to flourish.

To those building with similar values, and to journalists, researchers, and community leaders who want to explore these questions in greater depth: I welcome your engagement. This is a call for alignment.
