Navigating the Deepfake Era: Why AI-Generated Content Demands Our Attention

One of the most pressing and complex offshoots of this development is deepfake technology—a term referring to synthetic media that fabricates appearances or voices of individuals, often without their consent.

What Is a Deepfake?

Deepfakes use generative AI to create hyper-realistic but entirely false media. Originally a niche research endeavor, this technology is now mainstream—sometimes appearing as AI-generated influencers or actors in marketing campaigns and entertainment without viewers realizing they aren’t real. According to The UGC Agency, deepfake content is becoming increasingly difficult to detect and is being integrated into commercial applications without public transparency.

Simultaneously, the difference between user-generated content (UGC) and AI-generated content (AGC) has begun to blur. As The UGC Agency explains in their comparison of UGC and AGC, audiences are engaging with AI-generated content at rates that rival, and often surpass, traditional content—yet without understanding the underlying fabrication or its potential misuse.

 

Why Should the Public Care?

Deepfake content challenges human perception in powerful ways. It takes advantage of an evolved psychological reflex known as the “uncanny valley”—a response hardwired into the brain that creates discomfort when we encounter something that looks almost human, but not quite. While earlier AI-generated visuals triggered this reaction easily, newer models have crossed the threshold. They no longer "feel" fake—because they’re able to pass that primal survival check. This evolution means that a growing number of people may interact with content that manipulates their emotions, memory, and perception of reality—without knowing it.

The result? Not only does public trust in digital media erode, but misinformation and impersonation are harder to detect and stop. And when the public is unaware of how this operates, the tools meant for entertainment or creativity can be turned against civil society, used for fraud, identity distortion, disinformation, or coercive influence.

 

How to Spot a Deepfake (While It is Still Possible)

Although detection is becoming harder, experts advise looking for the following common inconsistencies in deepfake video and audio:

  • Eye Movement Irregularities: Deepfakes often have unnatural blinking rates or eye movements that don’t track naturally with the rest of the body (WellSaid Labs, 2023).
  • Lip-Sync Errors: The alignment between lip movement and audio may be slightly off—especially in low-resolution media.
  • Facial and Neck Artifacts: Look for inconsistent lighting, skin texture, or unnatural stretching around the mouth, eyes, and neck areas (Diabetes Victoria, 2023).
  • Motion Glitches: Jerky or robotic head and body movements can be a giveaway. Natural human gestures are difficult to synthesize convincingly.

Being able to spot these cues—even occasionally—can offer a small but crucial form of digital self-defense.

 

A Call for Awareness, Not Alarm

While AI-generated content and deepfakes can support creativity, accessibility, and innovation, they can just as easily be co-opted to mislead or exploit. Without clear ethical guardrails, the technology risks being used against the very people it was intended to serve.

The responsibility is not only on institutions or developers—it is on all of us to educate, to engage, and to demand transparency in how synthetic content is used in our public spaces, media, and personal lives.

We are living in a transitional moment. The question is no longer whether AI will reshape society—it already has. The question is how we shape our understanding, our safeguards, and our social contracts in return.
