Forget Me Not Part 2: Honoring Ancestral Resilience and Revealing Untold Truths

Within the depths of history lie the stories of our ancestors—tales of resilience, survival, and the enduring quest for identity. I am humbled to introduce you to Forget Me Not, a deeply personal piece dedicated to commemorating the extraordinary journey of one of my ancestors who, as a young toddler, was forcibly taken captive and transported to the Americas to endure the horrors of slavery.

 Honoring Ancestral Legacy:

Forget Me Not stands as a poignant tribute to my great ancestor, whose innocence was shattered and at the tender age of 2 ½ years old they were torn from their family and thrust into a life of servitude in South Carolina. Their story, etched in the annals of history, serves as a haunting reminder of the atrocities perpetrated against countless souls during the dark era of the transatlantic slave trade.

Confronting Historical Trauma:

For me, Forget Me Not represents a profound reckoning with the legacy of slavery and the enduring trauma it has inflicted upon generations of African descendants. It is a testament to the resilience and fortitude of my ancestors, who faced unimaginable hardships with courage and dignity, their spirits unbroken despite the cruelty of their circumstances.

Challenging Misrepresentation and Shame:

The journey to uncovering Forget Me Not was not without its challenges. In a society plagued by misinformation and constructed shame within my community, the truth of my ancestor's story was often obscured, relegated to the margins of history. Yet, through perseverance and determination, I refused to let their memory fade into obscurity, determined to shed light on the untold truths of their existence.

Navigating the Complexity of Identity:

Forget Me Not is a testament to the multifaceted nature of my identity—a tapestry woven from the threads of resilience, survival, and the enduring quest for freedom. It is a reminder that my history is not defined solely by the horrors of slavery, but by the strength and resilience of those who came before me, whose indomitable spirit continues to shape my identity to this day.

Celebrating Ancestral Resilience:

At its core, Forget Me Not is a observation of ancestral resilience and the enduring legacy of those who refused to be silenced by the chains of oppression. It is a testament to the strength and courage of my ancestors, whose voices echo through the corridors of time, inspiring me to honor their memory and carry their legacy forward with pride and dignity. My dream is that this kind of resilience will no longer need to be celebrated.

Lucky Star created Forget me not to honor her great ancestor who was taken captive at the age of 2 1/2 and transported from Jamaica to South Carolina where he would live his days as a slave.

In unveiling Forget Me Not, I invite you to join me in bearing witness to the untold truths of my ancestor's journey—a journey marked by pain, resilience, and ultimately, triumph over adversity. May Forget Me Not serve as a beacon of remembrance and reflection, illuminating the path forward as we honor the past and embrace the complexities of our shared humanity.
